MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2011 RESOLUTION NO. 1865

LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the Universalist Unitarian Church of Halifax is committed to thoughtfulness in matters of faith, individual liberty, freedom of religious expression and the celebration of the diversity of spiritual experience; and

Whereas the Universalist Unitarian Church established the Unitarian Universalist Initiative for PEACE, where PEACE stands for peace, equity, action, community, and environment; and

Whereas the first annual PEACE symposium was held on October 30, 2011, at Saint Mary’s University to explore the issues of peace and food security;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognize the Universalist Unitarian Church of Halifax and the organizers of the 2011 PEACE symposium for their commitment to a just society and to promote understanding and mutual respect among people of all faiths.

 

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 1, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 1949

LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas Bryony House is a 24-bed shelter in Halifax which has been offering a safe and secure refuge to abused women and their children since 1978; and

Whereas Bryony House provides shelter and culturally-sensitive support services including counselling to approximately 450 women and children, in addition to answering more than 2,500 distress calls each year; and

Whereas on November 3, 2011, Bryony House will host the Scarlet Soiree fundraising gala, which will bring together community members and police officers from across Nova Scotia in a show of support for women and children escaping from intimate partner violence;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognize Bryony House, its staff, volunteers, and supporters for their commitment to raising social awareness of partner abuse and helping women and children to live free of violence with renewed hope for the future.

 

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2011:RESOLUTION NO. 1963

LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has been a revered promoter of Canadian culture since its first radio broadcast in 1936, evolving into a full service broadcaster in French, English and Aboriginal languages; and

Whereas over the years the CBC has dedicated itself to providing quality regional programming as exemplified today in Nova Scotia by programs such as Information Morning, Mainstreet, and Maritime Noon which tell our stories which reflect the unique fabric of our province and its people; and

Whereas on November 2, 2011, the CBC will celebrate its 75th Anniversary as Canada’s national broadcaster, marking a milestone in the provision of outstanding programming by, for, and about Canadians;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognize the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for its commitment to both preserving and championing Canadian and Maritime culture and extend its congratulations on 75 distinguished years of national, regional and local programming.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 1980

LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the Halifax Mission to Seafarers is a not-for-profit charity providing help and support to seafarers from around the world; and

Whereas the Mission to Seafarers’ chaplain, staff, and volunteers reach out to seafarers arriving at the Port of Halifax, visiting them on their ships and offering a warm welcome at a time when they are separated from loved ones; and

Whereas on November 6, 2011, the Mission to Seafarers will host the Great Sea Tea, bringing together community members, volunteers, and supporters to celebrate a tradition of caring for the seafaring men and women who arrive in Halifax each year;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognize the Halifax Mission to Seafarers for its work in providing a hand of friendship to visiting seafarers of all nationalities and faiths.

 

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2083

LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the Atlantic Jewish Council has been observing Holocaust Education Week since 2004 with ceremonies in Halifax, Sydney, and Moncton organized to remember the millions of people who lost their lives in the Holocaust and to help ensure that an atrocity of this magnitude will never happen again; and

Whereas this year Holocaust Education Week runs from October 24th to November 9th with memorials and events including films, survivor testimony, and talks from authors, photographers, and theologians; and

Whereas this year, November 9th, Dignity Day, which marks the 73rd Anniversary of Kristallnacht, will be commemorated in Halifax at the Grand Parade by university students, school-aged children, and members of the community at large, committing themselves to respect diversity and the fundamental rights of all individuals and groups;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly thank the Atlantic Jewish Council, Edna LeVine, and the Holocaust Education Week committee for reminding us of our obligations to each other, and for helping to create a more just and peaceful world.

 

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2135

MR. LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia is a non-profit association that seeks to promote our food and beverage sector and shapes our hospitality environment in a creative and positive way; and

Whereas the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia represents approximately 1,550 industry suppliers and operators with more than 33,000 employees contributing significantly to the economic and cultural growth of our province; and

Whereas on November 8, 2011 the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia will host its fourth annual awards dinner to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit and culinary contributions of industry members;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognizes the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia for its outstanding commitment to developing and promoting our food and beverage sector, and thanks and congratulates all those nominated for awards at the fourth annual meeting of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia.

 

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2162

MR. LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas Eastern Front Theatre is one of Nova Scotia’s leading theatre companies, dedicated to the development, production and promotion of Atlantic Canadian theatre arts and artists; and

Whereas on November 8th Eastern Front Theatre launched its 19th season with the world premiere of The Passion of Adele Hugo, the compelling and little-known Halifax story of the daughter of Victor Hugo, written by David Overton and directed by Scott Burke, with music by Zachary Florence; and

Whereas The Passion of Adele Hugo marks Eastern Front Theatre’s first production in its new home at Neptune Studio Theatre, under the leadership of Artistic Producer Charlie Rhindress;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly congratulates the artistic team at Eastern Front Theatre and its superb cast including Martin Burt, Sara Farb, Bruce Godfree, Sabryn Rock and Amanda Leblanc, for its extraordinary musical production, The Passion of Adele Hugo.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2298

MR. LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas Saint Mary’s Elementary School has distinguished itself in Halifax for its annual Remembrance Day ceremony which includes inspiring music, poetry readings, posters, personal stories and the laying of wreaths; and

Whereas the students of Saint Mary’s Elementary School demonstrate their appreciation of the sacrifices and achievements of our veterans each year by actively participating in peer mediation, peaceful schools, and anti-bullying programs; and

Whereas on November 10, 2011, the students and staff of Saint Mary’s Elementary School organized a ceremony co-hosted by students Bruno Callahan-Cross, Sophie Twohig and Bailey Mauger, which included very moving presentations by Sergeant Wanda Ruth and Major Harry Crawford;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly commend the staff and students of Saint Mary’s Elementary School for their dignified and heartwarming observance of Remembrance Day and for promoting and practicing peace in their school.

 

MONDAY NOVEMBER 21, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2377

MR. LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas John Neville was born in England on May 2, 1925, and after serving with the Royal Navy, had a much-lauded acting career in Britain before moving to Canada in 1972; and

Whereas John Neville continued to build his exemplary reputation as an actor and artistic director at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, the Neptune Theatre in Halifax, and the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario, earning the Order of the British Empire in 1965 and the Order of Canada in 2006; and

Whereas on Saturday, November 19th, John Neville passed away at Wellesley Central Place in Toronto;

Therefore be it resolved that all members of the House of Assembly recognize the extraordinary life lived by John Neville, including his stewardship of our own Neptune Theatre, and send condolences to his wife of 62 years, their six children and six grandchildren, other family and friends at this difficult time.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2383

MR. LEONARD PREYRA: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the Downtown Halifax Business Commission’s Holiday Parade of Lights is a much anticipated holiday tradition for people of all ages across the Halifax Regional Municipality; and

Whereas on November 19, 2011, more than 100,000 spectators lined the streets of downtown Halifax for the 16th annual Holiday Parade of Lights with parade marshals from Chisholm Youth Services; and

Whereas the Holiday Parade of Lights encourages parade goers to bring new, unwrapped toys for children in need and non-perishable food items or cash donations for Feed Nova Scotia;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognized the Downtown Halifax Business Commission and all of the sponsors, volunteers, parade participants and supporters who are helping those in need while making the Holiday Parade of Lights one of the most popular seasonal events in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2451

MS. LENORE ZANN: Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the member for Halifax Citadel-Sable Island, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit organization which empowers and supports those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS as well as those at risk; and

Whereas the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia is a leading sponsor of the 2011 World AIDS Day Vigil, which pays respect to those who have been lost to HIV/AIDS while uniting our community in hope for a cure; and

Whereas on December 1, 2011, the World AIDS Day Vigil will take place at the Halifax Marriott Waterfront with attendees encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation for Manna For Health;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognize the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia for its commitment to advocacy, education and compassionate support on World AIDS Day and throughout the year.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2011: RESOLUTION NO. 2724

MR. LEONARD PREYRA: Madam Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas Chives Canadian Bistro emerged through the vision of Chef Craig Flinn, offering delicious and diverse menus based on seasonal produce from local farmers, artisan cheese and meat producers, and sustainable seafood; and

Whereas Chives Canadian Bistro’s reputation for extraordinary casual dining has been recognized through numerous awards as one of the top restaurants in Canada; and

Whereas Chives Canadian Bistro recently welcomed its 250,000th customer, and on Sunday, December 10th will celebrate its 10th Anniversary;

Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly recognize the two chef owners, Chef Craig Flinn and Darren Lewis, and the staff of Chives Canadian Bistro for their commitment to extraordinary cuisine made from locally grown, sustainable ingredients and extend heartfelt congratulations on the celebration of their 10th Anniversary.
