Leonard spoke with Chronicle Herald columnist Marilla Stephenson about the terms of reference for the Electoral Boundaries Commission, including the allowable seat variance of 25%.
On January 1, Leonard was quoted in the Pictou Bee: “There will be communities of interest, there will be linguistic communities, there will be geographic communities that will be spread out that we will have to make some accommodation for, and so we’re saying that there could be a 25% variance.”
Having each vote carry roughly the same weight is a “cardinal principle” of representative democracy, says Leonard Preyra, Vice-Chairman of the Select Committee on Establishing an Electoral Boundaries Commission. The province and NSCAD University have agreed to implement special advisor Howard Windsor’s eight recommendations aimed at making the university sustainable and protecting fine arts education in Nova Scotia.
“NSCAD and the government understand the importance of the creative sector to Nova Scotia’s economy and to its cultural fabric,” said Labour and Advanced Education Minister Marilyn More. “We all want fine arts education to thrive in this province.”
